Are nationally oriented journals indexed in Scopus becoming more international? The effect of publication language and access modality
18/02/2020
An exploratory, descriptive analysis is presented of the national orientation of scientific, scholarly journals as reflected in the affiliations of publishing or citing authors. It calculates for journals covered in Scopus an Index of National Orientation (INO), and analyses the distribution of INO values across disciplines and countries, and the correlation between INO values and journal impact factors. The study did not find solid evidence that journal impact factors are good measures of journal internationality in terms of the geographical distribution of publishing or citing authors, as the relationship between a journal's national orientation and its citation impact is found to be inverse U-shaped. In addition, journals publishing in English are not necessarily internationally oriented in terms of the affiliations of publishing or citing authors; in social sciences and humanities also USA has their nationally oriented literatures. The paper examines the extent to which nationally oriented journals entering Scopus in earlier years, have become in recent years more international. It is found that in the study set about 40 per cent of such journals does reveal traces of internationalization, while the use of English as publication language and an Open Access (OA) status are important determinants.

A tale of two databases: The use of Web of Science and Scopus in academic papers
06/02/2020
Web of Science and Scopus are two world-leading and competing citation databases. By using the Science Citation Index Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index, this paper conducts a comparative, dynamic, and empirical study focusing on the use of Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus in academic papers published during 2004 and 2018. This brief communication reveals that although both Web of Science and Scopus are increasingly used in academic papers, Scopus as a new-comer is really challenging the dominating role of WoS. Researchers from more and more countries/regions and knowledge domains are involved in the use of these two databases. Even though the main producers of related papers are developed economies, some developing economies such as China, Brazil and Iran also act important roles but with different patterns in the use of these two databases. Both two databases are widely used in meta-analysis related studies especially for researchers in China. Health/medical science related domains and the traditional Information Science & Library Science field stand out in the use of citation databases.

Where Are We? Using Scopus to Map the Literature at the Intersection Between Artificial Intelligence and Crime
23/12/2019
Research on Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications has spread over many scientific disciplines. Scientists have tested the power of intelligent algorithms developed to predict (or learn from) natural, physical and social phenomena. This also applies to crime-related research problems. Nonetheless, studies that map the current state of the art at the intersection between AI and crime are lacking. What are the current research trends in terms of topics in this area? What is the structure of scientific collaboration when considering works investigating criminal issues using machine learning, deep learning and AI in general? What are the most active countries in this specific scientific sphere? Using data retrieved from Scopus database, this work quantitatively analyzes published works at the intersection between AI and crime employing network science to respond to these questions. Results show that researchers are mainly focusing on cyber-related criminal topics and that relevant themes such as algorithmic discrimination, fairness, and ethics are considerably overlooked. Furthermore, data highlight the extremely disconnected structure of co-authorship networks. Such disconnectedness may represent a substantial obstacle to a more solid community of scientists interested in these topics. Additionally, the graph of scientific collaboration indicates that countries that are more prone to engage in international partnerships are generally less central in the network. This means that scholars working in highly productive countries (e.g. the United States, China) tend to collaborate with researchers based in their same countries. Finally, current issues and future developments within this scientific area are also discussed.

Web of Science and Scopus language coverage.
Scientometrics; Dec2019, Vol. 121 Issue 3, p1803-1813, 11p
The evaluation of research outputs in the form of journal articles is important to help with monitoring performance and to allocate funds. Elsevier's Scopus and Clarivate's Web of Science (WoS) are the two main sources for identifying outputs. For non-English-speaking countries, it is especially important that most of the scientific activity evaluated is represented in the bibliometric database used. All documents published in Scopus and WoS during 2018 (6,094,079 documents) were therefore analysed and compared for their languages and research areas. The most comprehensive source for each language and research area were identified and some coverage problems have been found. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Python vs. R: A Text Mining Approach for analyzing the Research Trends in Scopus Database
10/11/2019
In the contemporary world, with the incubation of advanced technologies and tremendous outbursts of research works, analyzing big data to incorporate research strategies becomes more helpful using the tools and techniques presented in the current research scenario. This paper indeed tries to tackle the most prominent challenges relating to big data analysis by utilizing a text mining approach to analyze research data published in the field of production management as a case to begin with. The study has been conducted by considering research data of International Journal of Production Research (IJPR) indexed in Scopus between 1961-2017 by dividing the analysis incurred into 3 fragments being 1961-1990, 1991-2010 and finally 2011-2017 as a case to highlight the focus of journal. This has indeed provided multi-faceted benefits such as increasing the effectiveness of the procured data with well-established comparisons between R and Python Programming along with providing detailed research trends on the research work incubated. The results of the study highlighted some most prominent topics in the existing IJPR literature such as system's optimization, supplier selection, process design, etc. providing well-established details relating to ongoing research works. The study also compared both languages suiting to a particular field of study for better comprehension and vastness of the research topics. The current research work is one of the part of a copyright work with registration number SW-10310/2018 titled Program for Analyzing Key Trends in Research Data-set. It has been designed in Python for carrying out detailed content analysis based on the available research database in bib format as in the current context it has been applied for IJPR journal and can be replicated on articles of any domain found using keyword search.
Comment: This study aims to help researchers by developing a Python based algorithm to analyse research trends using Scopus Database considering large amount of information in different domains as it will help the beginners to get fair enough idea of research being carried out in their fields of interest. A comparison with R has also been done to find as in which platform provides more relevant results

History of the Scopus Expert Content Selection and Advisory Committee of Korea
Science Editing , Vol 7, Iss 1, Pp 6-10 (2020)
With the objective of improving the quality of Korean journals and elevating them to international standards, the National Research Foundation of Korea, in consultation with Elsevier, formed the Scopus Expert Content Selection and Advisory Committee-Korea (ECSAC-Korea) as a local selection committee in August 2012. The committee reviews Korean journals for Scopus indexing and recommends them to the Scopus Content Selection and Advisory Board. In September 2019, ECSAC-Korea became part of the Korean Council of Science Editors (KCSE). This article describes the current status of Scopus indexing in Korea and the history, organizational structure, and role of ECSAC-Korea as part of the KCSE. The article also introduces the members of ECSAC-Korea and the KCSE steering committee for Scopus ECSAC-Korea, who have been active since September 2019.

Analysis of Korean journals rejected by Scopus since 2011
Science Editing , Vol 7, Iss 1, Pp 50-54 (2020)
This paper aims to provide publishers and societies who plan to apply for their journals to be listed in Scopus with critical guidelines to evaluate their performance from an objective, globally-informed perspective. It presents a qualitative case study of how applications of Korean journals to Scopus have been evaluated over a 9-year period (2011–2019). A content analysis was conducted of 106 applications that were rejected by the Content Selection and Advisory Board, according to a combination of 14 quantitative and qualitative selection criteria. This case study was used to categorize instances of failure and to illustrate practical strategies for local journals to use when applying to Scopus based on the lessons to be learned from rejected cases. The results of the analysis show that local journals should enhance the quality of the articles they publish, review why the journal should be considered international, and clearly address editorial policies and the concept, scope, and strategies of the journal.

Bibliographic and content analysis of articles on education from Vietnam indexed in Scopus from 2009 to 2018
Science Editing , Vol 7, Iss 1, Pp 45-49 (2020)
Purpose This study aimed to analyze the bibliographic characteristics and content of articles on education published in Scopus-indexed journals by authors with Vietnamese affiliations from 2009 to 2018. Methods Scopus was searched on July 6, 2019 using the search option “affiliation country,” with “Vietnam OR Viet Nam” as the country name, and “subject area” as “social sciences AND education.” Results A total of 193 articles were identified. They were classified by publication year, co-authors’ country, affiliation, subarea, journal, and author. Content analysis of these articles demonstrated that the number of publications on education from Vietnam in Scopus increased rapidly during the last 10 years. The top five countries of co-authors were Australia, the USA, New Zealand, the UK, and the Netherlands. The main research subfields were English-language teaching, pedagogy, and educational management. Conclusion Although Vietnamese education researchers collaborated with colleagues in developed countries to publish papers, there was still a lack of articles discussing global trends in education, such as cross-border education, equity in education, and international assessment programs.

The difference in referencing in Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar
ESC Heart Failure, Vol 6, Iss 6, Pp 1291-1312 (2019)
Abstract Aims How often a medical article is cited is important for many people because it is used to calculate different variables such as the h‐index and the journal impact factor. The aim of this analysis was to assess how the citation count varies between Web of Science (WoS), Scopus, and Google Scholar in the current literature. Methods We included the top 50 cited articles of four journals ESC Heart Failure; Journal of cachexia, sarcopenia and muscle; European Journal of Preventive Cardiology; and European Journal of Heart Failure in our analysis that were published between 1 January 2016 and 10 October 2019. We recorded the number of citations of these articles according to WoS, Scopus, and Google Scholar on 10 October 2019. Results The top 50 articles in ESC Heart Failure were on average cited 12 (WoS), 13 (Scopus), and 17 times (Google Scholar); in Journal of cachexia, sarcopenia and muscle 37 (WoS), 43 (Scopus), and 60 times (Google Scholar); in European Journal of Preventive Cardiology 41 (WoS), 56 (Scopus), and 67 times (Google Scholar); and in European Journal of Heart Failure 76 (WoS), 108 (Scopus), and 230 times (Google Scholar). On average, the top 50 articles in all four journals were cited 41 (WoS), 52 (Scopus, 26% higher citations count than WoS, range 8–42% in the different journals), and 93 times (Google Scholar, 116% higher citation count than WoS, range 42–203%). Conclusion Scopus and Google Scholar on average have a higher citation count than WoS, whereas the difference is much larger between Google Scholar and WoS.
